TERROIR OF CHALK
EXPLORE THE TERROIR
A FAMILY STORY

A geographical location, a soil, an exposure, a topography, a history: each lieu-dit has its own terroir.
On Mont de Berru, what they all share is the soil.
The mount is a residual hill detached from the Montagne de Reims. Its subsoil is composed of a succession of chalk layers formed by marine transgressions during the Upper Cretaceous period. The chalk reaches an altitude of 175 meters. On the upper slopes, it is overlain by shallow Thanetian sands, as well as by an agglomerate of marls, clays, and fluvial sediments deposited during the Sparnacian.

Our vineyard is located exclusively on the southern slope of the mount, in Nogent-l’Abbesse and Berru.
Our plots are planted with Chardonnay, a grape variety that thrives fully on chalky soils. They are called Derrière l’Abbaye, Les Perreuses, Les Alouettes, Le Haut du Pays, Les Routis, and so on. They lie on terrain ranging from 165 to 185 meters in elevation, directly on the chalk or on a very thin layer of clay and sand. This variation in relief gives rise to noticeably different aromatic expressions of Chardonnay from one plot to another. Their exposure is optimal, facing south to south-east.

On the estate, the vine is a family story. One that, through past generations, has given us a deep attachment to our terroir, the know-how to work it, and the ability to reveal it. It is now up to us, Adrien and Mathilde, to offer our own interpretation of the terroir of Mont de Berru.
Our plots are cultivated in harmony with nature, with a strong commitment to growing high-quality grapes. We practice under-vine tillage and natural grass cover. We favor organic farming methods to preserve the soil and biodiversity.
